Your bathroom basin (or sink as it is often referred to) is one of the mainstays of any bathroom suite, whether you're refurbishing a large family bathroom or updating a smaller space, such as a cloakroom or ensuite.
One of the most common mistakes people make when planning their new bathroom is buying a basin that simply doesn't fit. In this article, with handy video, we'll show you how to measure your existing basin, to ensure you pick the correct sized replacement. All you'll need is a tape measure, some paper and a pencil.

Here's how to measure for a basin

Start with the width. Measure the distance from one side of the basin to the other.

Next, measure the length. This is the distance from the rear of the basin to the front.

Then, on the exterior of the basin, measure from the top to the bottom. This will give you the height.

Finally, measure the depth. This is the interior measurement, from the deepest part of your basin to the overflow. This will give you an indication of the depth of water it can hold.

There are a wide variety of basin designs available, with the most common being pedestal basins, wall hung basins and semi pedestal basins. You can also purchase vanity units with basins included, as well as countertop or semi recessed basins.
